House of Convictions

I should like to say: If I am wrong about this
I have no guarantee that anything I say is true.
That is to say: If I make certain statements false
It’s uncertain I understand anything.

Remember that one is sometimes convinced
by simplicity or symmetry. Symmetry and simplicity.
One simply says: That’s how it must be.
From explanation to mere description.

We can’t just investigate everything. We are forced
to rest content with assumption. For the door to open,
the hinges must stay put. My life consists
in my being content to accept many things.

I have arrived at the rock bottom of my convictions.
These foundation-walls are carried by the whole house.
