Nope. 10 hours into his administration and no matter which way I look at it, don’t think I’m ever going to get used to it. Not now. Not in six months’ time. Not in 4 years.

  1. You look like your in love with the guy. You helped get him elected and it seems you’re prepared to moan about it for the next 4 years. Another period in time when we will again have no effective opposition.

    • Dear Mr. MacQuarie,

So nice to have you back.

Don’t let anyone else tell you that you’re spouting crazy, nonsensical blather. We here at All Fired Up in the Big Smoke fully admit that you’re on to us. In ways only eyes like yours could see, we sought to have Rob Ford elected mayor of Toronto in order that we would have something to write (no, ‘moan’) about for the next 4 years. Otherwise, our existence would be empty and meaningless.

      Thanks for keeping us honest.

      • Glad to be of assistance again.

Not that I believe you have taken any of my previous advice! You insisted on being RF-centric which boosted your egos but strengthened the resolve of others to vote for the man.

You lot are still as bad at communicating as Miller ever was. Your existence looks pretty meaningless to me.

      • Dear Mr. MacQuarie,

While we here at All Fired Up in the Big Smoke know what you’re talking about, perhaps you could take a moment and explain to any of the new readers the advice you graciously bestowed upon us throughout the mayoralty campaign.

Something to do with ignoring any candidate you didn’t agree with, not bother to engage in any discussion about their views or platforms. By not paying any attention to them, they simply fade from view. That basically your theory?

      • Dear AFUITBS, I’m not inclined to boil my cabbage twice but maybe you could enlighten us all as to what your intentions are with this blog? I can see that you are fixated with RF and not much enamoured of our democratic system, so please explain how a man’s girth is so important when it comes to municipal politics? Are you going to be like those trolls who bored the shit out of us for 7 years with only ad hominem attacks on DM? Is that what it’s going to be like for the next 4 years – calling RF dumb, stupid and fat? How is that advancing the cause any? Are you just lazy and self-centred like Mr. McQuaig?

      • Dear Mr. MacQuarie,

        … ummmmmm….. ‘fixated with RF’…… ?????

Let’s see, we here at All Fired Up in the Big Smoke write a municipal blog. RF is now mayor of this municipality. Before that he was a leading candidate for that office. So, fixated? Kind of comes with the territory, yes?

You’d have to go back a long way back through our archive to find any reference to the mayor’s weight from us. However, we do understood the use of it from others as it is representative of much more than a physical attribute in our mayor. It’s a whole mindset. Like Rush Limbaugh.

As for dumb and stupid? Well, it’s hard to avoid really. Dumb and stupid shroud the man’s worldview.

Our intentions? To reach out and make contact with Torontonians such as yourself who we’d otherwise never have the pleasure of talking to.

  2. Peter, why do you think there will be “another period in time when we will again have no effective opposition?”
Obviously, the opposition under Mayor Miller has either left politics (Case Ootes, etc) or are now on the inside on Mayor Ford’s team (Karen Stintz, David Shiner, John Parker, Denzil Minnan-Wong, etc).
So the “opposition” under Mayor Ford will consist of different people: such as Janet Davis, Paula Fletcher, Gord Perks, Joe Mihevc, Adam Vaughan, etc.
So are you saying this new opposition will be ineffective?
Or are you saying the media in the role of opposition will have no effect?

  3. Cityslikr,
yes it has only been a few hours since Rob Ford began his job as the next mayor. But as I have attended two press conferences now – one on Monday when he announced recommendations for councillors to have key positions, and one today when he announced wanting to cancel Transit City, it’s amazing how quickly it sinks more clearly that Ford is now the mayor.
Welcome to the new reality, for four years, my friend.

  5. Mr MacQuarie, I think you meant to write “you’re”, a contraction of “you” and “are”; “your” is an adjective that ascribes possession, as in “your comment perplexes me.”

Also, how on earth did the writer of this article help Mr Ford get elected? That seems unlikely. And why shouldn’t one moan for four years? The whole city should be weeping for eternity considering the troglodyte we now have as mayor.

    • Mr. McQuaig, you are correct. Thanks for the trouble you took to give me a lesson in grammar – did you learn that in school today?

“the troglodyte we now have as mayor.” Maybe you now should learn some manners? This is a political blog, not facebook. Learn to be polite before you comment. Didn’t your mother teach you anything?

      • There is no need to be rude and recalcitrant; I was trying to be helpful. And no, I did not learn that in school today. Did you?

I should “learn some manners”? Can you really deny that Mr Ford is extraordinarily ignorant and regressive? I do not mean to hurt anyone’s feelings, but it’s important to emphasis the enormous shortcomings of this man – even if it’s slightly rude – considering the equally enormous ramifications of his mayoralty. I don’t think politeness precludes accurately describing a mayor (who, by the way, will never see this comment and thus never be hurt by it).

      • We says what now, Mr. Arvelo McQuaig?

We here at All Fired Up in the Big Smoke would like to think that our new mayor is an avid reader of this blog and all the comments therein. He is, after all, known for his attention to detail if nothing else.

      • Dear Mr. Arvelo McQuaig,

We here at All Fired Up in the Big Smoke do so love the edit capabilities that WordPress gives us, thereby airbrushing out our gaffe while leaving Mr. MacQuarie’s out there for the whole world to see.

Also, we did not know there was such a word as ‘apposite’.

        Many thanks.

      • It must be a boring life for Mr. McQuaig and the folks at AFUITBS. I suspect you write simply to see your silly comments posted here.

You’re no Oscar Wildes, you know. And, you’re not in the least helpful.

  6. I was expecting this blog to start counting down when the stormtroopers will be marching in the streets, the gates of hell opening up and coming of the “end of days” with Rob Ford as mayor.

I have a few predictions for the next four years, your garbage will still be picked up, your library will still be open, the snow will be plowed each winter, people will still take the TTC, people will still drive downtown to work, some of us will have an extra $60 to spend in the new year, and the gates of hell will still remain closed…

    • Rob Ford is the mayor, so?

I would expect something more biblical in proportion if the gates of hell had opened up.

The melodrama on this website will be indeed tasty~!

  7. Opposition?

Council is a farce. Stintz supported Miller on Transit City but quickly changed her mind with the promise of a career enhancing job. RF appointing Stintz is a sure sign that history is about to be repeated. Was he blackmailed (as rumoured) into doing that or is he trying clever politics? Either way, it looks like business as usual where appointments are being used to blunt debate or curry favour. I see a repeat of the apathy that reigned when DM was focused only on his supporters and his fantasies, especially in his first 3 years. The newbies will be ineffective, systematically corrupted and the lefties will become as lazy as D M-W, Stintz and Parker were under DM, delighting no doubt if bad fortune befalls the City. It’s a cultural thing now where politics trumps what’s best for the City. Those in the media who are not still ranting, ad nauseam, are still ignoring the cultural dysfunction at CH – they’re too lazy to get down and dirty in the Wards where voters will soon realise they’ve been duped again. Just watch how little is made of Stintz’s change of coat or Mammoliti’s deplorable work ethic, for example.
